Almost every woman patient that has come in with a "Slipped Disc" has said: "I was told nothing hurt more than childbirth." So to all you men out there that translates into quite a bit of pain. "Slipped Disc" is actually the term used most often however the disc cannot slip. What happens is the inside or Nucleolus which should be in the center looking from the top and in the center looking from the side actually moves and causes the disc to bulge off to one side. Often this will also press on the nerve just as if the bone went out of place (subluxated). However this is a much more painful and serious condition and usual takes longer to correct and stabilize. Most of the people that this happens to has lifted and twisted at the same time. Usually they cannot stand up straight and you see them standing bent to the side from the waist up, usually away from the side of pain. Other symptoms will be an increase of pain when coughing, sneezing, or straining to have a bowel movement. Often they become constipated because the nerves in the lower back where this condition most often occurs also go to the intestines. So now the intestines do not get the correct nerve supply and starts having problems. Frequent urination often accompanies a "slipped disc" as the nerves in that area also go to the bladder. Pain down the leg or both legs is also a common complaint. If left untreated problems in the midback or neck area can start occurring. In the worst case the disc can herniate or in other words the center nucleolus breaks through the side fibers of the disc. At this time surgery is often performed. Surgery in itself can lead to other problems down the road and that is why you may know someone who had surgery and was never the same again. More often than not a "slipped disc" can be handled successfully through Chiropractic care if caught in time. It is not the fastest to respond and the pain is uncomfortable to the point of being almost unbearable. I have treated many cases and had quite good results but the key is to get started on treatment right a way and not wait till it gets worse and worse and more and more unstable. Please see me for a second opinion Before Back Surgury. Remember if you suspect you may have this condition call us and we will discuss you problem or make an appointment for a complimentary consultation.
